S&T Sunday: Christmas Star

For the past few years our Christmas tree topper was nonexistent. I’m pretty sure we got it in the early 90s, and hadn’t changed it since. It got to this point where it was getting too old and falling apart, so we threw it away and never got a new one. Until I attempted to make one yesterday!

With the pipe cleaners I have, it looks more like an angry monster. It was a little difficult getting it to stay up, but I stuck some of the branches into the star and it’s being supported by other branches (yay, fake tree- the branches act like giant pipecleaners! :))

It looks like this in the back:
If you want, here is an attempt at a pattern:

Materials: Bulky yarn in red and yellow (or whatever colors you want)
Size N/9.oomm hook
Lots of pipe cleaners to help it stay up (I used 5)
Newspaper or Polyfill stuffing or something of the sort

Picot: ch 3, sl st into same st

Star (Make 2):
With star color, ch 4 and sl st together to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2dc into ring, *ch 2, 3dc into ring*, repeat *to* three more times. Ch 2, sl st to top of beginning ch 3.

Rnd 2: Sl st into middle dc of the 3dc from the previous round, skip next dc, *(3dc, 2ch, 3dc) in ch2 sp, skip next dc and sl st in middle dc, skip next dc*, repeat *to* four more times.  Sl st to next dc to join.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc into same space, sc into next two dc. *(2sc. picot, sc) into ch2 sp, sc into next three dc, sl st in sl st of previous round, sc into next three dc*, repeat *to* four more times, ending with a sl st. Fasten off.

Tube:
With tube color, ch 4 and sl st together to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 5dc into ring.

Rnd 2-3: Dc into each dc.

Rnd 4: *2dc, 2dc into dc* twice. (8dc total)

Rnd 5-??: Dc into each dc until desired length. Fasten off.

Assembly:
Sc stars together. Stuff. NOTE: Don’t stuff too much, or it will be too heavy. I had to take some newspaper out to lighten my star so it’ll stand up better.

Sew tube between two star points. Weave pipecleaners around top of tube and star until it stands up (you’ll definitely have to play around). If you have other ideas of how to make your star stand up, do share!

Attach to top of tree! Spread holiday cheer!
